Top 100 Juniors – Class of 2018

ricky-miezan
Following two years of live evaluations and last year’s Top 50 + Watchlist, the Class of 2018 becomes ranked within a Top 100 – and there’s a new No. 1 recruit. Committed to defending champion North Carolina, midfielder Ricky Miezan receives the honor after a summer circuit where he was a man amongst boys.

While there are many familiar faces towards the top, four recruits enter the Top 10 for the first time. At first look, it’s as geographically diverse of a list as there’s been so far and perhaps most interestingly, UNC and Michigan lead the way with the most recruits on the list. Have a look below at who cracked this year’s Top 100.

1. Ricky Miezan, M, Episcopal (Va.) | Madlax | UNC | No. 4
In many ways, Miezan was a no-brainer to overtake the No. 1 spot. He’s always passed the eye test with a 6’3, 220-pound build and remarkable athleticism reminiscent of a young Myles Jones. Looking less and less raw as time goes on, the Alexandria native has polished his game a noticeable amount over the past year to get to where he is, developing his ability as a feeder and on defense. Miezan put up 35 goals and seven assists last year, also standing out in soccer and track.

2. Matt Magnan, M, Fox Lane (N.Y.) | Prime Time | Syracuse | No. 2
Magnan became the first sophomore to pick up All-American honors since 1999, netting an impressive 62 goals for the Foxes. Uber-confident and physically imposing, the lefty has excellent range on his outside shot and already looks the part of an ACC midfielder whether it’s a step-down or on the run. As he continues to develop his right hand and other aspects of his game, there’s no doubt that Magnan will remain towards the top of the list.

3. Jack Myers, A, Gonzaga (D.C.) | Crabs | Ivy League | No. 22
The most ambidextrous player in the class, Myers led the senior-laden Eagles in goals with 50 tallies along with 22 assists against an unrelenting schedule. Every bit of 6-foot-3, his basketball background is apparent around GLE as he embraces contact and surveys the field with an innate feel for the game. Deceptively quick, it will be intriguing to see what he can do as defenses focus on limiting him, though an excellent summer with the Baltimore Crabs should instill even more confidence.

4. Isaiah Dawson, M, Bishop’s (Calif.) | West Coast Starz | Ivy League | No. 3
Though his production dipped during the spring, there’s no denying Dawson’s phenomenal upside and overall well-roundedness. A smooth operator with his dodges up top, he warrants constant attention from longpoles, especially since his outside shot has taken a big step forward. Dawson was named All-Tournament at Under Armour playing with the West squad, standing out with defense and frequent punt return clears in particular.

5. Will Bowen, D, Boston College HS (Mass.) | Laxachusetts | UNC | No. 8
Bowen holds down the top D spot once again, finishing up a spring littered with honors and carrying that momentum into a summer where he constantly made his presence known. Standing 6’3 and 220 pounds, he fits the mold of Tar Heel defensemen with his size, but pairs that with excellent 1-on-1 play to frustrate attackmen. Picked up 121 groundballs with 11 points as a sophomore for BC High.

6. Joey Epstein, A, Landon (Md.) | Madlax | Hopkins | No. 6
Forced to carry the load due to graduation losses and injuries, Epstein often put the team on his back with multi-goal performances for the Bears. A pure competitor who has both toughness and burst, he plays a similar style to Rob Pannell and projects well at the next level, especially if he improves as a distributor. Also a two-way standout for Landon’s football team as a running back and linebacker.

7. Jacob Kelly, A, Calvert Hall (Md.) | FCA | UNC | No. 7
Yet another Kelly bound for Chapel Hill, the MIAA product and coach’s son was a steadying force as he adjusted to taking on No. 1 defensemen, racking up 31 goals and 36 assists in 2016. Kelly’s ability to make his teammates around him better sets him apart, as he’s the consummate quarterback and the guy you want to give the ball to at the end of the game. Will need to grow physically going forward, but that hasn’t held him back yet.

8. Wilson Stephenson, LSM/D, Brunswick (Conn.) | Prime Time | Duke | No. 32
Rising up a whopping 24 spots, Stephenson was a high impact cover man for ‘Wick and followed that up by turning heads all summer. Big, mean and left-handed, he gets it off the carpet cleanly and is remarkable with the ball in his stick running upfield. In addition, Stephenson is one of the better off-ball defenders in the country.

9. Nicky Solomon, A, Centennial (Ga.) | LB3 | UNC | No. 20
Playing a season after the graduation of brother Nate (Syracuse) was no issue, as Solomon notched a ridiculous 74 goals and 85 assists to lead the state in points and earn All-American status. With his combination of explosiveness, elite stick work and vision, he’s already incredibly difficult to cover, becoming one of the tournament’s offensive leaders at Under Armour while repping the South.

10. Griffin Westlin, M, Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) | Leading Edge | Hopkins | No. 17
Westlin is another member of the Class of 2018 that really hit his stride in the spring, dicing opponents for 82 points as one of the best underclassmen in the state. The 5’10, 180-pound playmaker was often dominant leading the way for his club team, also helping NJ to a title at Under Armour. Can make things happen while inverting and has shown that he’s a clutch scorer when called upon.
