StringKing / Recruiting Rundown Top 25 High School Power Rankings: Week 9

Seven teams in last week’s Top 25 dropped games over the past few days, so shakeup is abundant in Week 9. Nothing changes at the top, however, as No. 1 Hill Academy of Canada completed their season this weekend with a pair of wins to finish a perfect 11-0 in a week in which they were featured at length in a Sports Illustrated article. The rest of the top five also stays where it is, as McDonogh (Md.), Darien (Conn.) and Victor (N.Y.) all survived significant challenges while Bullis (Md.) has been relatively untested over the past week leading up to the postseason.

Perhaps causing the most confusion, things are getting weird on Long Island. In Nassau Class ‘C’, undefeated Locust Valley (N.Y.) handed then-No. 9 Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) its first loss in a 10-9 thriller recapped here. Checking in at No. 19 this week, the Falcons enter national rankings for the first time in program history, while CSH sits a spot behind them. Over in Suffolk Class ‘A’, things are as jumbled as anywhere else in the country. Former No. 12 Connetquot (N.Y.) drops out entirely after losing twice this past week (to Smithtown East and West Islip), while Smithtown West shockingly fell to .500 Northport (N.Y.) in overtime. Despite possessing wins over No. 21 Ward Melville and No. 22 Smithtown East, the Bulls drop to No. 25, though the playoffs will really clear things up.

In the MIAA, McDonogh has clinched the top seed and a coveted first round bye in the playoffs thanks to a double OT win over Boys’ Latin. St. Paul’s re-enters the rankings at No. 17 (after beating Calvert Hall), hitting the road to battle with No. 8 BL for the other first round bye in one of the nation’s best rivalries, which will take place on Tuesday afternoon. Due to the Lakers’ loss, Gonzaga jumps up to No. 6 despite losing a head-to-head with BL earlier in the season. The Eagles will go for their 7th straight WCAC title on Monday evening against DeMatha live on LaxSportsNetwork.com.

Among the craziest moments of the season, Westfield (N.J.) took down Summit (N.J.) in double overtime, bumping the Hilltoppers out of the rankings (for now, at least). Providence-bound keeper Toby Burgdorf can be thanked for the tying goal with an 80-yard prayer seen here. Going forward, playoffs will also help rankings more sense in the Garden State.
