Recruiting Rundown National High School Power Rankings, 5/20

Despite the fact that several notable state championships won’t be played for another few weeks, today’s rankings are getting closer and closer to what they’ll look like for the final edition in June.

Top-ranked Haverford (Pa.) passed a significant test on Monday night when they dispatched former No. 4 Hun School (N.J.) in the Inter-Ac Challenge final, pulling away in the fourth quarter to win 15-8. Still undefeated at 25-0 against an unbelievably challenging schedule, you could make the argument that they could even stay at No. 1 with a loss Friday against Culver (Ind.) due to their overall body of work. Right behind them is undefeated Massapequa (N.Y.), a gritty and athletic team that will have to get through more challenges to get off of Long Island and into the state tournament. Ontario’s Hill Academy sits at No. 3 after winning the NALI over Culver in overtime, while Landon (Md.) and Gonzaga (D.C.) jump back towards the top at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. A notable change is MIAA champion St. Mary’s (Md.) in the No. 7 spot after clinching a trio of huge playoff wins, awarded with a well-deserved position after a phenomenal turnaround from their struggles earlier in the year.

There are also some major moves in the bottom half in the top 25, starting with No. 16 Delbarton (N.J.) sliding up seven spots and Avon Old Farms (Conn.) re-entering the rankings at No. 17 after clinching a prep title in New England. Craziness is present in Connecticut, where Darien (Conn.) fell from No. 5 two weeks ago to unranked after losing three games in the last 10 days. No. 22 Greenwich and No. 23 New Canaan both have wins over the Blue Wave as well as a handful of other big victories on their resume.

As always, feedback is welcomed at tyxanders@gmail.com.
