Gearing up for this weekend’s East Coast Fall Showcase and Team Invitational, Madlax founder Cabell Maddux and longtime Landon (Md.) assistant J.R. Bordley recently combined forces on a new and exciting event to take place on the Bears’ campus in Bethesda.
Saturday’s individual event will feature 120 of the region’s top uncommitted players in the class of 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 split up between six team led by college coaches.
“The goal for the first year of the East Coast Showcase was to limit the number of players and be strict to find the very best players available who have yet to verbal,” Maddux says of the event. “We timed it because it’s the last recruiting weekend of 2014 and not only that, but it’s an easy event with two fields side by side so it’s doable for all of the college coaches.”
To start the day, Duke assistant coach Ben DeLuca will be a skills clinic and demo before the teams begin their games, which will run from 9am to 3pm on two Bermuda grass fields. While the Top 40 All-Star rosters are being assembled, DeLuca and Tufts assistant coach Taylor Harris will give a recruiting talk to all 120 players in attendance, with the ASG taking place at 3:45 p.m. to wrap up the day.
On Sunday, 11 of the top high school teams on the Eastern seaboard will participate in a team tournament, joined by the Madlax Nationals (mostly commits) and four showcase teams. In an interesting wrinkle, the showcase teams will be made up of players who performed well the day before. Those teams are split into a four-pool bracket and will ultimately play for a championship. The pool of teams, schedule and roster can be seen below:
Pool A: Landon (Md.), St. Augustine (N.J.), St. Anne’s Belfield (Va.), Showcase ‘C’
Pool B: Calvert Hall (Md.), Paul VI (Va.), Churchill (Md.), Showcase ‘B’
Pool C: Gonzaga (D.C.), St. Christopher’s (Va.), South River (Md.), Showcase ‘A’
Pool D: Madlax Nationals, St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (Va.), St. Mary’s Ryken (Md.), Showcase ‘D’
“We wanted to be slightly unique and have the best high school teams that we can possibly have,” says Maddux. “The goal is to broaden it nationally and we believe word of mouth will spread to make that happen, especially considering how competitive each game is expected to be.”
Recruiting Rundown will have freelancer Dan Aburn on site for the entirety of the event. Check back for his recaps and the All-Star rosters once they’re made available.
