In this week’s Throwback Thursday post I figured I would feature one of my favorite showdowns from the 30 or so games I caught during the spring of 2014, taking place when No. 2 Culver came to the campus of No. 4 McDonogh and knocked them off, 13-9. Nothing wrong with a nearly 12-minute game highlight reel, no?
If there was any doubt that a military school from Indiana (stockpiled with Canadians and the Midwest’s best, mind you) deserved such a high national ranking, the Eagles silenced the haters by going 3-0 in the MIAA. That included wins earlier in the week over Gilman and Mt. St. Joe.
You can take a look at Jon Posner’s varsity roster here, though some of the standouts to look out for maroon are attackman #22 Ethan Walker ’16 (Denver), LSM #6 Matt Neufeldt ’14 (Maryland), d-middie #23 Ryan Coulter ’14 (Bowling Green hockey), middie #21 Joel Tinney ’14 (Hopkins) and middie #10 Pierre Byrne ’14 (Notre Dame). Face-off man #9 Beau Ecksten ’14 (Delaware) won 16 of 24 on the day.
Some notables for McDonogh were middie #36 Brinton Valis ’14 (Hopkins), attackman #16 Trey McGee ’14 (Denver), defenseman #19 Alex Hurdle ’14 (Notre Dame), goalie #3 Jacob Stover ’15 (Loyola) and attackman #12 Bobby Austin ’15 (Loyola).
